Pros and cons of CoPilot Southern Africa - Offline GPS Navigation app for iPhone and iPad

CoPilot Southern Africa - Offline GPS Navigation app good for

Until Co-Pilot I used Google Maps on my iPhone for navigation, and I wasnt expected much more. Google Maps is slow to update your position, uses data to download the maps, doesnt talk, and the screen blacks out if you dont keep touching it. Co-Pilot is a proper turns your iPhone into a proper navigation device: - "Live" updating of your position - The maps are on your phone, so there is no data use - Voice prompts etc My only criticism is that the user interface is not immediately obvious out of the box. There are a number of icons and terminology that Im going to have to read up on before I fully understand the system.
After reading a couple of reviews on websites I decided to spend the money on this software. In a word, excellent. The maps are up to date, it is responsive, the routes it chooses (well at least the ones I have tried) all make sense an Points of Interest are very comprehensive. If you are thinking of getting a turn by turn based sare, it is definitely worth the money.
Very impressive on iPhone 4. It has great looking street nav, website integration, contact integration, speed limit display and lots more. I ran it head-to-head against my Garmin Nuvi 200W and it kicks Garmins butt: locates satellites quicker, gives more informative prompts, looks better. Four gripes: 1. Address input needs work. Looks like a clunky matric Delphi project, does not utilise Google Live and does not add any AI to the process. This was the only disappointing area and made me miss my Garmin. 2. I wonder though why you can select an address from a contact but cannot save an address to a contact. How odd. 3. Setup menu is a little disjointed, with non standard navigations, but not crazily so. 4. No traffic integration. Id definitely recommend this app.

Some bad moments

Some city and road names have changed in South Africa since 1984 and this app still cannot find the new names. (Mandela drive in Emalahleni (Witbank) is just one). Dont get me started on POIs, it could not find hotels or restaurants. (StayEasy and Brazenhead in Emalahleni, just to name some) The app does not support text to speech, who doesnt anymore? They do mention the ability to purchase the option, but not available yet? The app is also not very intuitive to use. Access to the iPod interface is buried three levels deep. Easier just to exit app and return as multitasking now works... I could live with some of the apps shortcomings, but the map data is not up to date and that is a major failure... Have since bought the TomTom app and it is a great improvement. Wish I can get my money back for this junk.
Dont buy this app, hasnt been updated for 2 years now. Still got the old highways on the maps.
